The Haka

The question seems to be this morning , "Should New Zealand ditch the Haka before a rugby match?" OMG! NO! This is so much part of our culture, and when it's performed before a rugby match it is just so amazing( when you are a KIwi), to see it. I sincerely hope this does not happen. One of the most memorable moments of my life was when I was working at Leisure Lodge back in the 90's and we had a Maori rugby team stay and on the last night they requested the Assistant Manager and I be in the bar before dinner, I'll never forget standing there with Ruth wondering what we were doing there, when the guys began to line up in front of us, ( now these were bigguys and it was a bit unnerving), and then they broke into the start of the Haka, I cannot describe the feeling of standing there as they approached, I had tears running down my face, the feeling of honour and pride were so huge I could hardly breath. It was a Haka to thank us for our hospitality during there stay. I'm not really a rugby fan but I cannot walk away from the TV until I've seen the Haka, it never fails to send shivers down my spine. So no no no, we must not stop the Haka before our rugby or in fact any sports events. It is uniquely New Zealand, it says "Hey we are Kiwi, proud and here."
Right that's my soap box for this morning, now off to hang out the washing.
